EC Epitaphs From the Abyss brings new life to EC Comics with an extra-sized, 40-page issue, that treats us to a collection of shocking tales of torment and tension in classic EC tradition. With four unique and original stories Epitaphs From the Abyss is a truly terrifying collection.
From the publisher that drove Tales from the Crypt, Vault of Horror, Haunt of Fear, and many more into the depraved hearts of an unsuspecting world, the immortal EC Comics returns with its first bold and bloody new series in nearly 70 years! In partnership with William M. Gaines Agent, Inc., Oni Press is proud to create a 40-page testament to terror ushering in the full-scale resurrection of comics’ most infamous and influential publishing house…
In this first issue of Epitaphs From the Abyss, some of the best names in comics come together to give us stories that include Killer Spec; Senator, Senator; Family Values; and Us vs. Us. These short stories combined for a 40-page wonder of tension and torment.
“Killer Spec,” written by J. Holtham with artwork from Jorge Fornes, is a creative and horrific story features outstanding gory artwork that will leave you on the edge of your seat. I was fully immersed in this tale from the outset and was sad to see it end. In a perfect world this story would’ve been longer, but Epitaphs From the Abyss sure started with a bang.
Writer Chris Condon and artist Peter Krause give us “Senator, Senator,” a tale that delivers smart writing paired perfectly with well-executed artwork. This creative team showed that they knew how to work alongside the one another to give us a complete short story that delivers on all fronts.
The talent pairing of writer Stephanie Phillips and artist Phil Hester put together a suspenseful and terrifying tale in “Family Values.” While the artwork style is not my favorite, it undeniably works with suspenseful nature of this story. The page design, along with the lettering, was top-notch elevating this tale to new heights and kept us immersed and eagerly turning to the next page. A truly thought-provoking and suspenseful story.
“Us vs. Us” is the last tale in this premiere issue. Written by Brian Azzarello with artwork from Vlad Legostaev, this creepy and eerie tale is brought to life through unique artwork that complements the story. This was an off-the-wall and chilling story that had me thinking long after the book was closed.
On top of the amazing stories within the pages of this premiere issue is the spectacular cover from Lee Bermejo that gives us eerie and uneasy feelings even before opening up the comic.
EC Epitaphs From the Abyss #1 delivers everything you’d expect from classic EC Comics. The fear-inducing stories are extremely well-written with outstanding artwork to complete the package. Longtime fans of EC Comics as well as newcomers will get something terrifying from this new addition to the classic comics.
