Review Overview

Most people have worked a dead-end job to make enough money just to pay bills feeling like there life wasn’t going anywhere. Well that is what forces Marty Tarantella to pull off the perfect heist in TRVE KVLT #1 released by IDW Publishing.

Tarantella has been flipping burgers for 15 years. He has no kids, no hobbies, no love interests, and, essentially, no life. But what he does have is a plan to change everything. Years of watching the daily rhythms of the neighboring stores has given Marty the idea for a perfect heist, but when he accidentally steals a supernatural weapon from a cult full of violent lunatics, the resulting Satanic panic will be way above his minimum-wage pay grade. Nothing can prepare you for the coming of TRVE KVLT, a deliciously horrifying and hilarious new series!

The story by Scott Bryan Wilson (Pennyworth, Batman Annual) sets you up to see where Marty is coming from and his plan to rob the local strip mall on his lunch break from Burger Lord. Wilson’s words paired with Liana Kangas (Star Wars Adventures, Razorblades) art, Gab Contreras (Witchblood) colors, and letterer DC Hopkins (Nocterra, Pennyworth) bring you a unique story that could honestly be one of the three parts and I would be happy.

TRVE KVLT could tell us a story about a down on his luck burger flipper and his struggles to make do in life. The book could also just follow Marty’s job with the struggles and his plan to rob the local shops on his free time. The creative team could have made the story based solely around a Satanic cult in Tarantella’s life, but they were able to bring all three topics together for one fun and worthwhile story.

As the book moves along I found myself wanting to turn the page to see the stellar artwork and amazing story. This is the least you can ask for in a comic book. By the end of the first issue I was sad I have to wait until the second issue hits my local comic book shop to continue reading on what will happen next to Marty and his “perfect heist.”

TRVE KVLT is well worth the read and you can pick it up at your LCS and make sure you grab the second issue of the four-issue series on September 14.
