Review Overview

Master storyteller resurrects one of the most iconic monsters in Michael Walsh‘s electrifying new comic adaptation of Universal Monsters: Frankenstein. This new series from Skybound’s partnership with Universal Pictures explores the classic story of an unforgettable monster with a modern twist.

In this first issue, Dr. Henry Frankenstein begins his unholy quest to create life by robbing the grave of a decorated police officer. But little does he know that the corpse has a son who is mourning a father-and that this young boy will forever change Frankenstein’s life.

Michael Walsh’s modern retelling of the classic story stays true to its roots while adding a fresh horror take, making it such a refreshing horror read. Walsh makes nods to the original source material while adding depth to the story to appeal to both new and old fans of Frankenstein and Frankenstein’s monster. The creator’s passion for the 1818 tale and the 1931 film shines through in every panel and a piece of dialogue to create an immersive reading experience. His love for the story is evident in his attention to detail and commitment to honoring the legacy of Frankenstein while adding his own unique spin on it.

The narrative is fast-paced, keeping me glued to each page. While I had an idea what this story would be like having seen the 1931 film, the twists and turns in the journey through the debut issue were intriguing. Some adaptation stick too close to the original material, while others tend to veer too far away, but Walsh’s Frankenstein is able to sit right in the middle.

Walsh’s artwork is stunning, capturing the essence of horror with muted colors and detailed illustrations that bring each panel to life. At moments, you can almost hear the thunder and feel the lightning as well as the electricity flow in the lab when creating the monster. Not too mention the first thing that will draw you into this series, the main cover of the first issue. Bright orange with the monster donned with flowers. Such a beautiful way to ease into the comic series.

Universal Monsters: Frankenstein #1 is a thrilling entry into the comic book adaptation brought to life by cartoonist Michael Walsh. The storytelling and artwork are fantastic brining a new twist to a classic tale. As was not a surprise to me but after finishing the first issue of latest Universal Monsters story from Skybound was not disappointing in the least.

Universal Monsters: Frankenstein #1 hit local comic shops on August 28, 2024 from Skybound and Image Comics.
