Review Overview

The Kai-Sei era is upon us with the thrilling, action-packed Godzilla #1. Tim Seeley‘s incredible script and Nikola Čižmešija stunning illustrations make for an explosive premiere issue that new and old fans of the King of the Monsters won’t want to miss.

In 1954, experimentation with a mysterious energy source known as Kai-Sei awakened Godzilla and a host of immortal kaiju. In the years that followed, humanity has been pummeled by near-constant monster attacks. While Japan has begun to treat the kaiju like natural disasters, understanding that their attempts to fight Godzilla only make the threat worse, the American G-Force is going to fight, fight, fight.

The Americans have just discovered the ultimate tool in the fight against kaiju: a young boy named Jacen with the power of Godzilla. Able to harness the mysterious Kai-Sei in the same vein as the King of the Monsters, this boy will either save the world… or bring about its doom.

I’ve always been a casual fan of Godzilla, occasionally reading a comic or seeing the latest feature film when it hits digitally. However I’d never fully immersed myself into the world of kaiju storytelling—that is, until IDW Publishing announced the launch of the Kai-Sei era of Godzilla. With the spectacular writer Tim Seeley penning this new comic series, I was all in.

The premiere issue captures the essence of what makes a good Godzilla story, while offering a more fresh and modern vibe to the lore. Loaded with plenty of explosive action, this first issue dives headfirst into the Kai-Sei era without holding back.

While Godzilla is, unsurprisingly, the main reason why most readers will pickup this book, it’s really the human element that adds heart to the story. This time, the series introduces us to characters with special abilities, a new twist to the story that adds so much more to the world. Seeley had crafted new characters that we can connect to on a personal level, while also adding superhuman abilities to some which expands the Godzilla mythos is such a fun way.

Launching a new era to such an iconic franchise is a big undertaking and along with the outstanding script from Seeley is the amazing artwork from Nikola Čižmešija. The new look King of the Monsters is truly breathtaking, blending the familiar with renewed energy. The comic has a quintessential feel you’d expect from this world, but also has it’s on vibe as well. It’s hard to put my finger on it. Čižmešija’s illustrations paired with the vibrant colors by Francesco Segala makes for spectacular imagery. And let’s not forget the stellar lettering by Nathan Widick.

After reading this wonderful first issue of Godzilla, I am eager to see how the Kai-Sei era unfolds. A new chapter is here. Godzilla’s world is evolving, now expanding with the introduction of super humans and it will be interesting to see where we go from here.

Godzilla #1 is an extraordinary start to the Kai-Sei era at IDW Publishing. Between Tim Seeley’s outstanding script and Nikola Čižmešija fantastic illustrations, this debut issue is a thrilling kick-off packed with action and a bit of heart. Though I was a fringe fan prior to reading this issue, I feel Seeley and Čižmešija have officially turned me into a die-hard reader now. Seeley and Čižmešija kick-off the Kai-Sei era in a sensational way, making it a must-read for long time fans and those looking to dive into the world of Godzilla for the first time.

Godzilla #1 hits local comic shops on July 23, 2025 (FOC: June 9) from IDW Publishing.
