When Golden Rage hit shelves back in 2022 it was a pleasant surprise. A comic touted as Battle Royale meets The Golden Girls–a fitting description. Now, Chrissy Williams and Lauren Knight are back for another exhilarating journey into a dystopian future where older women are left to fend for themselves on a remote island with Golden Rage: Mother Knows Best.
In a world where old and infertile women are deemed useless to society and abandoned on an island, Golden Rage documents their golden years of making friends, baking dessert, and fighting to the death. Mother Knows Best follows on from the first Golden Rage miniseries for a glorious new adventure.
Chrissy Williams’ writing shines through once again in Mother Knows Best. Williams portray’s these women in such a unique light–each character comes alive with their own distinct personalities drawing you into their personal stories as well as the large narrative at hand. It’s clear Chrissy holds immense respect for her story with each and every line spoken by these formidable women.
Mother Knows Best builds off what we experienced in the initial five-issue miniseries. The benefit of this new miniseries is we can dive right into the humor and action without having to be introduced to each character all over again. A tale that I would not normally gravitate towards, Golden Rage is a fun and wild ride that is worth each page turn.
While the tale is unique in it’s own right, visually speaking, Lauren Knight, Sofie Dodgson, and Becca Carey bring their A-game in the premiere issue of Mother Knows Best. Knight’s illustration breathes life into this desolate isle filled with vibrant personalities. Lauren’s ability to capture both action-packed sequences as well as moments that may seem a bit more humorous or tender. Their work on the first miniseries was fantastic, it’s wonderful to see this premiere issue is even better! Dodgson adds another layer to the visual appeal with vibrant colors that enhance the story.
What stood out the most to me was the design and lettering by Carey. Their work on each page, panel, and overall book completes the visually stunning package of this first issue. Carey’s clever use of letters on specific panels were truly mesmerizing. In addition the overall look and feel of the book is something to admire. This work by Carey, along with Knight and Dodgson makes for a strikingly polish issue.
Golden Rage: Mother Knows Best #1 offers some of what we loved in the first miniseries plus a bit more–along with a crazy twist ending to the first issue. Chrissy Williams’ script draws you into the tale, while the visuals from Lauren Knight, Sofie Dodgson and Becca Carey make you stay for a bit. This off-the-wall story about elderly women fending for themselves is one that I truly cannot get enough of and cannot wait for the next issue.
Golden Rage: Mother Knows Best #1 hits local comic shops on April 9, 2025 (FOC: March 17) from Image Comics.
