The Great British Bump-Off #1 is just what we all needed in our lives, an Agatha Christie-style murder mystery set in the world of English competitive baking. From Giant Days writer John Allison and artist Max Sarin comes a crazy new comic book at Dark Horse Comics.
When she enters her country’s most beloved baking competition, Shauna Wickle’s goal is to delight the judges, charm the nation, and make a few friends along the way. But when a fellow contestant is poisoned, it falls to her to apprehend the culprit while avoiding premature elimination from the UK Bakery Tent… and being the poisoner’s next victim!
Murder mystery meets the Food Network meets Cartoon Network is not something we would’ve ever imagined saying about a comic book, but here we are.
With great writing from Allison, artwork from Sarin and amazing lettering from Jim Campbell, The Great British Bump-Off #1 exceeded expectations. Each page turn had us more amazed by what the comic has to offer, including a grindcore vocalist, cat co-host and much more.
While the debut definitely made in comic book form, it also had the feel of a television episode and left us waiting for the next installment to see what is going to happen on the set of the cooking show! If you are looking for something outside the norm of comic books today, The Great British Bump-Off has something to offer.
The Great British Bump-Off #1 hits shelves at local comic shops on April 12, 2023 and be on the lookout for the second issue dropping May 10 from Dark Horse Comics.
Editor of The Great British Bump-Off, Daniel Chabon, joins the Capes and Tights Podcast for Episode 102 to discuss this comic and so much more!
