The final chapter in the Marvel Studios Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy is set to hit theaters on May 5, 2023 with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

The film is the 2nd film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe‘s fifth phase and 32nd MCU film in total. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is once again written and directed by James Gunn as he did with Guardians of the Galaxy and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. This final chapter also seems to be the final chapter for Gunn at Marvel Studios as he is now an executive at DC Studios.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 stars Chris Pratt as Peter Quill / Star-Lord, Zoe Saldaña as Gamora, Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer, Karen Gillan as Nebula, Pom Klementieff as Mantis, Vin Diesel as Groot’s voice, Bradley Cooper as Rocket Raccoon’s voice, Sean Gunn as Kraglin Obfonteri, Chukwudi Iwuji as the High Evolutionary, Will Poulter as Adam Warlock, Elizabeth Debicki as Ayesha, Maria Bakalova as Cosmo the Spacedog’s voice, and Sylvester Stallone as Stakar Ogord.

While this is not the last we will see some of these characters, one would imagine it will be for others.

In Gunn’s third film, The Guardians of the Galaxy are adjusting to life on Knowhere when parts of Rocket’s past resurface. In order to protect him, Peter Quill must lead the Guardians, along with their newest member, Cosmo the Spacedog, on a dangerous mission that could lead to the current team dissolving.

The Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy will become the sixth MCU solo film to get a third movie, following Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Ant-Man and Spider-Man.

The gap between the first two films and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was greater than most would’ve initially expected. However, Gunn was once fired from Marvel after some past tweets resurface, but then was re-hired to finish out the trilogy. In the meantime, Gunn went on to make The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker for DC, landing himself a top-dog job at DC Studios in 2022. His next movie after his final Marvel film will be Superman: Legacy.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 hits theaters May 5, 2023 with projections coming in around a $120-155 million opening weekend in North America. The total domestic run for the trilogy film is expected to be between $288–$403 million. One would imagine Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will bring in between $750 million and $1 billion globally when all said and done. The first two films grossed more $1.6 billion worldwide combined.
