As someone who isn’t the biggest fan of cats in general, Hairball #1 from Dark Horse Comics is definitely a nightmare of a comic book.
Junji Ito meets Hayao Miyazaki is the newest comic from the Eisner-nominated creators of Fear Case and Apache Delivery Service. Written by Matt Kindt with artwork from Tyler Jenkins and colors by Hilary Jenkins.
A young girl with a black cat begins to suspect the innocuous beast is behind all her troubles: her parents’ fighting, family plagues, and innumerable supernatural horrors. As she tries her best to rid herself of this creature, she discovers that maybe the cat is not evil after all and a greater terror may be behind these horrific events harming her life.
While a story about a cat is not something we typically navigate towards, we had to take the chance with Kindt and Jenkins at the helm. However, they did prove that cats are really the worst.
Okay, we will back off cats for a bit. The Hairball creative team really nailed this comic in ways that are hard to explain. The story is odd, but works amazingly alongside the unique artwork from the Jenkins duo. Add to all of this, Kindt’s covers are sure to draw in the comic reader looking for something new.
Hairball #1 hits local comic shops on April 5. In addition to the main cover from Matt Kindt, the debut issue features a variant from The Department of Truth‘s Martin Simmonds!
