The Museum of the Moving Image (MoMI) features a lobby of clean white walls and floors you expect at any modern art museum. However, what lurked on the third floor was the polar opposite with the exhibit Living With The Walking Dead.
MoMI and AMC partnered to bring the Living With The Walking Dead exhibit to MoMI’s Queens, N.Y. museum from June 25, 2022 through the end of the year. The exhibits takes up about half the third floor.
As you exit the elevator and at the end of the corridor you are welcomed by a Living With The Walking Dead sign to invite you to see what lies around the corner. On your right is a beautiful display of all 193 issues of Robert Kirkman‘s original The Walking Dead comic book series by the same name on which the television shows have been based. The top right features The Walking Dead #1 and follows you until you get to the final issue and are ready to experience what is next. TWD was also co-created by artist Tony Moore with Charlie Adlard taking over after the first six issues.
Living With The Walking Dead boasts props, costumes, special effects pieces and so much more from the AMC television series which premiered on Halloween in 2010 and is wrapping up with their finale this fall. Front and center are costumes from Rick Grimes, Negan, Darryl Dixon, and more. Signs, weapons, and other key items are also on display. Greg Nicotero‘s special effects, makeup and prosthetics are on grand display in a dark winding hallway to add even more effect to the wonderful world of The Walking Dead.
The experience is like no other. The chance to look up and close at items from the series is not something you get shined upon you often. The Walking Dead has made TV history and you can actually see the items used on screen.
Living With The Walking Dead addresses the origins, production, fandom, and impact of The Walking Dead. The exhibit explores the television series, the comic book that started it all, and the unique innovations it has contributed to depictions of the zombie apocalypse.
The Walking Dead is one of the most watched television programs and has spun out a number of other series such as Fear The Walking Dead, and The World Beyond. New TWD programing including Isle of the Dead, Tales of the Walking Dead, a yet-to-be titled series starring Darryl, and a Rick / Michonne series will all air over the next few years. Tales of the Walking Dead premiered on AMC this past Sunday.
Other comic book titles such as Negan Lives, Walking Dead: Alien, and Skybound X’s Rick Grimes 2000 released over the past few years. Clementine, a graphic novel by Eisner award winning Tillie Walden, released in June 2022 and has another two books planned.
Reservations for Living With The Walking Dead are required and can be made via the MoMI website. You don’t want to sleep on this exhibit. Visit as soon as possible.
