Review Overview

Moon Knight is a character that stands out from the rest of the Marvel Universe. He is a vigilante who suffers from dissociative identity disorder, giving him access to multiple personalities that serve as his alter egos. His latest adventure in Moon Knight: City of the Dead takes him on a harrowing journey that is both stunning and terrifying.

Moon Knight: City of the Dead #1 starts with a gripping storyline of a young runaway who is attacked by a gang of death cultists and left barely alive outside the Midnight Mission. Moon Knight’s code of conduct and morals lead him to take action to defend the travelers of the night and ensure their safety.

David Pepose has done an excellent job with the writing, crafting a tale that is both mature and engaging. The storyline is dark, intense, and packed with action, keeping readers captivated from start to finish. The battle scenes are well thought out and easy to follow while still providing a level of grit that is not often seen in traditional superhero comic books.

Pencils from Marcelo Ferreira and inks by Jay Leisten are stunning. The use of shadows and lighting makes the panels come alive, creating an overall unsettling atmosphere throughout the issue. The colors by Rachelle Rosenberg provide a sense of foreboding that perfectly matches the storyline.

Towards the end of the comic, the team-up heading into future issues is simply amazing. This scene alone is enough to keep readers hooked and looking forward to the next issue.

The combination of excellent writing and stunning artwork make it a standout miniseries. It is rare for a comic book to have such a mature tone and contain such a deep and engaging storyline. The debut issue is a perfect introduction to the City of the Dead storyline, leaving readers craving more.

Moon Knight: City of the Dead #1 hit shelves at local comic shops on July 19, 2023.
