Brace yourselves for the unapologetic, visceral tale that is Night People—where violence meets vogue and the spark of love ignites a brutal blaze. We’re talking blood-splattered panels here that, oddly enough, manage to entwine the reader in a dark romance.
Adapted from Barry Gifford‘s novel by writer Chris Condon, with cinematic artwork of Brian Level, Night People #1 is a debut that does not shy away from violence. When novels are adapted in comics you never know what you are going to get, but Condon doesn’t pull his punches; he’s crafted a great story with star-crossed relationship that simmers beneath the surface of their volcanic mission.
Level’s artwork doesn’t just tell a story; it propels us through it. Night People is the sort of comic book one devours as much with the eyes as with the mind. Each panel is an opera, a ballet of brutality and beauty. The design is, by all accounts, nothing short of outstanding. However, Level’s illustrations and the colors by Ronda Pattison are the key to this bloody comic.
Whether or not you’re familiar with Gifford’s source material, Night People is worth the experience alone. Condon’s writing and the art from Level and Pattison is not for the faint of heart, but well worth it in the end. The creative team have not just adapted this story—they’ve owned it.
Night People #1 hits local comic shops on March 6, 2024 from Oni Press.
