Review Overview

Steve Orlando returns to explore an explosive new chapter in Scarlet Witch’s history with a self-titled series along with artist Jacopo Camagni. With Orlando and Camagni at the helm, we have been given a spellbinding and visually stunning debut issue.

In a witchcraft shop in Lotkill, New York, the Scarlet Witch and Darcy Lewis sell magical remedies and assist those who wander in through the Last Door, a portal that appears only to people with nowhere else to turn. Recently, the Wizard disrupted their peace by targeting Wanda and her brother, Quicksilver, at the behest of a mysterious patron he called his “angel.” Wanda and Pietro survived the attack, but the mystery lingers…

Steve Orlando, fresh off his anniversary run of Scarlet Witch & Quicksilver, further develops the exciting status quo introduced in her previous run, Wanda Maximoff’s role as hero to the helpless continues. The pacing in the debut issue is well done giving us time to understand what is going on with the characters, but also throwing lots of threats at Wanda along the way. The story unfolds smoothly, revealing what promises to be a great story moving forward.

Orlando gives us a high-stakes adventure with unexpected twists and turns that features just the right amount of humor thanks to Darcy Lewis. The witty banter adds levity to tense situations allowing for a great balance.

While Orlando story is well done, the standout in this series is Jacopo Camagni’s stunning artwork. Camagni’s illustrations bring a typical New York street to life with the addition of magical demons and intricate spellcasting. The action sequences are intense with each panel immersing us in a world of magic.

Jacopo Camagni and Steve Orlando have captured Wanda’s character wonderfully in this debut issue. Truly showcasing her ability to be calm, cool and collected until she needs to be a force of nature. This debut issue sets the stage for what seems like will be a wonderful series at Marvel Comics.

Scarlet Witch #1 hit local comic shops on June 12, 2024 from Marvel Comics.
