Review Overview

Space Outlaws #1, from Scout Comics, has to be one of the most beautifully designed comic books of 2023 and the story follows closely behind. Written and drawn by Marco Fontanili (Kingjira, Pentagram of Horror), the three issue series took us by surprise and finds itself on our shortlist for best comics of 2023.

Space Outlaws #1 is an amazing story, filled with action and suspense at every turn. The most dangerous criminal in the solar system, the F-24K prisoner, manages to escape from a maximum-security prison on Mars and makes it all the way to planet Earth, where he plans to resume his criminal activities. The prison’s wardens send their deadliest robot to stop him, setting off a chain of events that keeping us engaged.

The illustrations and design in Space Outlaws #1 are simply stunning, featuring a unique color palette of pink, black, white, and gray tones. The artwork is detailed and expertly crafted, making every panel a work of art. The design of the book is equally impressive, with a layout and pacing that ensure readers are never bored. The combination of Fontanili’s art and story makes Space Outlaws #1 one of the most visually stunning comic books of the year.

One of the most impressive things about the debut issue is how it manages to balance action and story, while also beautifully made. The comic moves at a brisk pace, but there is never a sense that the story is being rushed. The action scenes are expertly choreographed, and the dialogue is well-written.

While we don’t want to shy away from the wonderfully written comic, Space Outlaws’ design and artwork is so well done that we cannot help but focus on it as we talk about the book. This is a true work of art.

Space Outlaws #1 hits local comic shops on July 12, 2023 from Scout Comics.
