James Tynion IV has a knack for telling horrifying stories and this continues with Spectregraph. This dark and creepy new tale from one of the best in the business just adds to the great new series coming from DSTLRY. From the onset of the debut issue, you are immediately drawn into what seems to be a truly weird and unusual story. A mansion on the coast the exudes an ominous presence, setting the stage for what is to come.
Tynion has never paired up with an artist to co-create a project we haven’t liked. His ability to adapt each story to the artist and team-up with some of the biggest names in the business is unparalleled. Christian Ward’s illustrations in S adds another layer to the depth of the story. He creates an atmospheric visual experience that is both haunting and beautiful. Plus, the larger format of DSTLRY comics gives Ward more space on the page to explore.
Even after reading the solicitation for Spectregraph we found ourselves mystified on what will happen next, keeping us guessing through the issue. The plot twists and turns in unexpected ways, just what we hope for a haunting and horrifying comic. The story is not exactly what we were expecting in such an amazing way. We really don’t know where the book is headed in future issues and we love that so much.
If you are a fan of James Tynion IV’s other books such as Something is Killing the Children or The Nice House on the Lake, then Spectregraph is a must-read. Christian Ward’s artwork perfectly illustrates the script Tynion is tell, while Aditya Bidikar‘s lettering adds another amazing layer to the story, making for a complete reading experience. The eerie and uneasiness you feel in the debut issue makes you want to read with the lights on and your back to the wall.
