DSTLRY, the next-generation publisher redefining creator-owned comic books and collectibles, is excited to announce a biting new series from the legendary creative team and Eisner-award-winners Brian Azzarello and Eduardo Risso: The Blood Brothers Mother. The team is responsible for some of the most revered, incisive, and chaotic crime epics of the 21st century, including 100 Bullets, Moonshine, and Flashpoint: Batman.
The creators reunite with veteran editor Will Dennis, who edited the pair’s noted collaborations. The trio returns with a carnage-filled Western saga, bringing their honed characters, dialogue, and textured illustration to a genre steeped in American iconography and bloodshed. The comic will hit comic book stores in May 2024.
The Blood Brothers Mother follows three children—their step-father gunned down by their recently paroled father; their mother kidnapped; their family torn asunder. The kids set off to rescue her across the wild Texas frontier. Throughout their journey, they’ll face the harsh elements of an unforgiving landscape, filled with wild animals—and men—hungry for blood. Merciless bounty hunters and more pursue the children as they embark on a relentless quest to rescue their family. One of the children also hides a secret bound to complicate their passage.
Along the way, they’ll learn the real cost of revenge—not just in lives, but in how it stains a soul. While revenge may be satisfying in the moment, it leaves a yearning behind that lasts a lifetime. And once you taste it, nothing else is ever so sweet.
“Eduardo and I have been sitting on this story for years. When we first discussed it, neither of us thought we were ready to tell it. Our perspective, it wasn’t right,” co-creator and writer Brian Azzarello explains. “Westerns are where America expresses its myths, but the truth of America is violence— something we first explored in 100 Bullets. The frontier was a brutally harsh environment, but fertile; it fed the extremes of human morality. The desert is a hell of a sandbox to set stories in.”
While the creators’ themes might be familiar to readers, what isn’t is Risso’s stunning painted art. “The Blood Brothers Mother has offered an amazing opportunity to explore a time and place Brian and I have yet venture into,” co-creator and artist Eduardo Risso says. “It’s not the most friendly, but it should be memorable.”
David Steinberger and Chip Mosher of DSTLRY commented, “We are thrilled to bring the legendary team of Azzarello and Risso back together for this epic Western. Their vision for this series aligns perfectly with DSTLRY’s ethos of unrestrained storytelling.”
This new series is a must-read for fans of survivalist time pieces including 1883, Blood Meridian, and The Good, The Bad and the Ugly. Look for this savage Western series in comic shops and digital platforms via www.dstlry.co in May 2024. Additional details on variant covers and special editions will be announced soon.
