The new year is upon us, this means one of the most anticipated television series of 2023 is almost here. The Last of Us hits HBO on January 15 and will also stream on HBO Max in 4K.
The Last of Us is a television adaptation of the 2013 video game by the same name developed by Naughty Dog. The series was created by Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann for HBO. It is the first HBO series to be based on a video game, and is a joint production by Sony Pictures Television, PlayStation Productions, Naughty Dog, The Mighty Mint, and Word Games. It is said to be the largest television production in Canadian history.
The series will follow Joel, played by Pedro Pascal, a smuggler tasked with escorting the teenage Ellie, portrayed by Bella Ramsey, cross a post-apocalyptic United States. It will feature Gabriel Luna as Joel’s younger brother Tommy, Merle Dandridge as resistance leader Marlene, and Anna Torv as Joel’s smuggler partner Tess. Nick Offerman, Nico Parker, Murray Bartlett, and more appearing in guest roles.
The Last of Us features a first season consisting of nine episodes written by Mazin and Druckmann; the latter wrote and directed the game. Gustavo Santaolalla, original video game composer, has composed the score for the series.
