Eric Powell and Lucky Yates have joined forces to bring readers a twisted comedic tale in Lester of the Lesser Gods. This comic, with artwork by Gideon Kendall, is a unique blend of dirty humor, post-apocalyptic adventure and barbarian battles that was a hell of a ride.
The story follows Lester, the bastard son of Odin, as he navigates a post-apocalyptic wasteland. The humor is dark and irreverent, adding a fresh twist to the barbarian-style narrative. While the story may not be groundbreaking, the jokes and witty banter between characters more than make up for it.
The success of Eric Powell’s previous work on The Goon serves as a testament to his ability to create engaging and entertaining stories. We had no thoughts that Lester of the Lesser Gods would not carry the banner of unique comedy and action. While the story wasn’t totally perfect, the humor was spot on. The characters dynamics are well-developed and we find ourselves rooting for Lester as he faces off against formidable foes like Will Frye the Technomancer Guy.
Gideon Kendall’s artwork complements Powell and Yates’ story extremely well, capturing the chaotic world while adding a whimsical feeling. The character designs are distinctive, and each panel is filled with a ton of energy and movement that brings the story to life. Kendall’s style adds an extra layer of fun.
While Lester of the Lesser Gods may not be a perfect comic, it does offer a refreshing change of pace from the world filled with superhero or horror comics (not that we are complaining). When opening Lester of the Lesser Gods #1 we were looking for a something new and different and the humor and creativity that Powell and Yates bring to us was just that. It’s a wild ride from start to finish.
Lester of the Lesser Gods is definitely for fans of Powell’s The Goon and is a fun distraction from our regularly schedule programming with dirty humor and unconventional storytelling. Eric Powell and Lucky Yates have made a fun and engaging tale that is brought to life by the artwork of Gideon Kendall. We had fun reading this wild adventure.
Lester of the Lesser Gods #1 hits local comic shops on May 1, 2024 from Dark Horse.
