It is always exciting in our books when a new miniseries starts at Marvel Comics. The Ultimates, written by Deniz Camp and illustrated by Juan Frigeri, is no exception. The latest series based in the relaunched Marvel Ultimate Universe is a fast-paced, action-filled and stunning thrill ride.
Spinning out of Jonathan Hickman and Stefano Caselli‘s Ultimate Universe #1, Deniz Camp and Juan Frigeri assemble an all-new team of Ultimates in a series that kicks off the next chapter of the new Ultimate line.
Six months ago, Tony Stark sent Peter Parker a radioactive spider to set him back on the course to become Spider-Man. Since then, Iron Lad, Captain America, Doom, Thor and Sif have begun to do the same for other lost heroes, building a network of super-powered heroes hungry for change… Now they must band together to destroy the Maker’s Council and restore freedom and free will to a world ruled from the shadows.
Deniz Camp does a wonderful job of tossing us readers directly into the chaos of battle, revealing the dire straits the characters are in. We immediately catch glimpses of a world reshaped by The Maker’s grip, while underscoring the emotional burden and immense responsibility the heroes have riding on their shoulders. The creative team doesn’t waste time, space or energy in this first issue. From the outset the book moves forward at a relentless pace making every moment count.
Frigeri illustrates a beautiful and visually stunning artwork throughout the pages of The Ultimates. He brings characters and scenes to life with great detail while also capturing dynamic action sequences. From the explosive scenes to quiet more intimate moments of conversation, Frigeri’s art captures the emotion depth of this debut issue. Additionally, Federico Blee colors and Travis Lanham lettering complete the artist package of the The Ultimates.
We are truly excited with the debut issue of The Ultimates and where it is potentially headed. It has a gripping story and wonderful artwork that delivers on all fronts. Deniz Camp and Juan Frigeri crafted a story that has us gripped and eagerly waiting for the next issue. This new Ultimate Universe Marvel has created is scratching that itch I have wanted from them for a long time.
