If you’re a fan of Skottie Young‘s I Hate Fairyland comic series, then you’re in for a treat. The Eisner Award-winning writer is back with a new anthology series called The Unbelievable, Unfortunately Mostly Unreadable and Nearly Unpublishable Untold Tales of I Hate Fairyland. This five-issue miniseries features untold stories from the world of Fairyland, written and drawn by a stellar lineup of creators.
The first issue of Untold Tales of I Hate Fairyland contains two stories. The first is “Bruud the Brutal,” written by Skottie Young and illustrated by Aaron Conley, the team behind Bully Wars. This story pits Gert, the foul-mouthed, axe-wielding protagonist of I Hate Fairyland, against a barbarian named Bruud. The second story is “Don’t Trust the P.I.G. in Apartment 23,” written and illustrated by Dean Rankine (Simpsons Comics, Invader Zim). In this story, Gert finds herself in a classic fairy tale scenario, and things don’t go exactly as planned.
While the stories in this anthology series take place in the world of I Hate Fairyland, the artwork is a bit different from what fans are used to. Aaron Conley and Dean Rankine both bring their own unique styles to their respective stories, but they still manage to capture the essence of Fairyland. The bright colors and whimsical characters are all there, despite the different art styles. The addition of Nate Piekos of Blambot lettering each story helps bring us closer to the original series.
The story from Dean Rankine is particularly well-suited for this anthology series. His brand of humor and irreverence is a perfect match for the world of Fairyland. And of course, it’s always a treat to see Skottie Young back behind the keyboard, creating more stories for Gert and her colorful cast of companions.
It’s worth noting that The Unbelievable, Unfortunately Mostly Unreadable and Nearly Unpublishable Untold Tales of I Hate Fairyland was originally released on Substack in digital form. However, it’s great to see it now available in print form as a five-issue miniseries from Image Comics. Holding a physical copy of a comic book in your hands can be a much more immersive experience than reading it on a screen, and this series is definitely worth adding to your collection.
If you’re a fan of I Hate Fairyland, or you just enjoy irreverent, offbeat comic book storytelling, then you won’t want to miss The Unbelievable, Unfortunately Mostly Unreadable and Nearly Unpublishable Untold Tales of I Hate Fairyland. This anthology series offers a fresh take on the world of Skottie Young’s Fairyland, and the first issue sets the stage for more exciting, hilarious, and sometimes violent adventures to come. It also doesn’t hurt, at all, that stellar artist Mike Del Mundo is the cover artist.
Untold Tales of I Hate Fairyland #1 hit local comic shops on July 5, 2023.
