The Venom franchise featuring Tom Hardy as the symbiote has come to a close with Venom: The Last Dance. For those who enjoyed these films it may be a somber day, but guessing for some it is a day of relief. I am more in the middle.
Eddie and Venom are on the run. Hunted by both of their worlds and with the net closing in, the duo are forced into a devastating decision that will bring the curtains down on Venom and Eddie’s last dance.
If you take these films at face value, fun popcorn eating action films, and not as attempts at award-winning movies, then you will enjoy them each and every time you watch. This goes the same for Venom: The Last Dance. While not a perfect film by any stretch, The Last Dance scratches that itch for the comedy duo of Venom and Eddie Brock while also blowing some stuff up and an alien invasion.
Somehow Venom: The Last Dance is a fitting ending to the series of films, while also breathing new life into it. This is an odd turn of events leaving for what is an uneven film but an overall enjoyable experience. The chemistry between Eddie and Venom remains one of the series’ strongest suits—a dynamic blend of humor and tension that keeps us engaged.
The biggest drawback for me with the third film in the Venom franchise is the much anticipated debut of Knull. While I was not expecting much from Sony on the Knull front, I had hope in the back of my mind they would be able to do the character justice and make him front and center of this film. What we get is limited screen time that felt more of a cameo of the fierce villain than a reason for a fight.
Knull is a formidable foe for Venom and The Last Dance could’ve been a truly epic battle much of the likes of the comic book arc King in Black. However, as much likely expected we only get a taste of the villain.
Despite the small draw backs with the use of Knull and nothing overly exciting about this film, there is still space for enjoyment of Venom: The Last Dance—especially if you’ve appreciated past entries within this series! Action sequences remain thrillingly choreographed spectacles filled with visceral intensity paired alongside moments filled with humor that we have come to expect in Venom films.
In the end, Venom: The Last Dance is a fitting ending to the Sony Venom series. A film that is more enjoyable than its predecessor and equally enjoyable to the first film in the series, which is not bad for a third film in franchise. Fans of the films will enjoy, haters will continue to hate. Overall, it was an enjoyable experience.
Venom: The Last Dance was written and directed by Kelly Marcel.Hardy stars as Eddie Brock / Venom alongside Chiwetel Ejiofor, Juno Temple, Rhys Ifans, Peggy Lu, Alanna Ubach, and Stephen Graham. Clark Backo also appeared, while Cristo Fernández appeared as a bartender, reprising his role from Spider-Man: No Way Home‘s post-credit scene.
Venom: The Last Dance hit theaters on October 25, 2024.
