Marvel Studios Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is well underway and we may know more about Phase 5 in the not too distant future.
President of Marvel Studios, Kevin Feige talked with Games Radar recently with Feige stating the MCU’s next phase will become more clear “in the coming months.”
“As we’re nearing the end of Phase 4, I think people will start to see where this next saga is going. I think there have been many clues already, that are at least apparent to me, of where this whole saga is going. We’ll be a little more direct about that in the coming months, to set a plan, so audiences who want to see the bigger picture can see a tiny, tiny, tiny bit more of the roadmap. ”
Rumors around the internet have stated that in Phase 5 we will start to see the next saga unfold. During Phases 1-3 we saw the Infinity Saga take place with the culmination coming in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. The next saga is rumored to be Secret Wars.
The Secret Wars story-arc they will likely use as a basis for the saga took place in 2015-16 and was spearheaded by writer Jonathan Hickman. His eight issue series was the main story of the arc.
Secret Wars involves the destruction of the Marvel Universe and various other alternate universes (including those seen in the Ultimate Marvel and Marvel 2099, among others), with each universe’s respective Earth combining with each other into Battleworld, a planet that exhibits the aspects of the various universes. The planet itself is divided in many territories that are mostly self-contained and where a “pocket universe” composed of a specific storyline or universe reside and evolve. Various versions of individual Marvel characters can be present multiple times on the Battleworld.
As seen over the years, Marvel Studios doesn’t always pull exactly from the comics, but uses the comics as a basis for the story in the movies and series.
Marvel Studios will be in attendance at the San Diego Comic Con from July 21-24, but will likely hold off on any major announcements until D23 on September 10.
