Wellwood is a stylish, atmospheric alien horror filled with emotion. While not extremely terrifying, it certainly has its moments. The stunning alien design and outstanding special effects, led by the legendary Alec Gillis, captured my attention and never let go.
When Laura Harper is diagnosed with a terminal illness, her husband Nick becomes desperate to save her. His search leads to the discovery of an extraterrestrial entity that he believes holds the key to her cure. However, their actions soon attract the attention of local law enforcement, including the sharp-eyed Deputy Gracie Marsh and the town’s steadfast leader, Sheriff Bradley. As the couple’s choices unravel, they find themselves entangled in a web of consequences beyond their control.
Wellwood isn’t your typical alien story. At its heart, it’s a deeply emotional love story about the lengths one partner will go to save the other. Nick, portrayed by Reid Collums–who also wrote the screenplay–is willing to cross some unimaginable lines to saving his wife, played by Camielle Balsamo, from her terminal illness. Meanwhile, Laura faces what to do next. This emotional core sets Wellwood apart from other alien films, blending a chilling touch of otherworldly horror.
The film features a small cast of characters, including Collums and Balsamo, with Lance E. Nichols and Keisha Castle-Hughes as Sheriff Bradley and Deputy Gracie Mars. Sienna D’Addario bookends the film as Victoria, making a brief but memorable appearance. Despite the small cast, each actor delivers a solid performance that injects fresh takes into familiar character tropes, keeping me invested. While some characters–Nick–have moments where you absolutely hate them, you understand what and connect with what he is going through.
While Wellwood‘s premise, acting and camera work are all solid, it’s the special effects that truly shine. Directed well by Eliza Hooper, the film leverages Alec Gillis’s extensive experience in special effects–who is known for his work on the Alien and Tremors franchises, Mortal Kombat, Jumanji, It, and more. The alien design in Wellwood is particularly impressive. The slimy, eerie, and unforgettable design elevates the creepy tone of the film and serves as a significant highlight. Thought not flawless, the special effects succeed in giving Wellwood a striking visual style that lingers as the credits roll.
The production as a whole feels polished and well-executed, reflecting on a small group of dedicated individuals that worked diligently to deliver a solid film. Though the ending seems somewhat abrupt and not what I was hoping for, it doesn’t detract much from the film’s overall engaging story. At its core, Wellwood offers a gripping mix of emotion and alien terror made even more impactful by outstanding special effects.
