You Shouldn’t Have Come Here by Jeneva Rose follows the story of Grace Evans, a New Yorker seeking a break from her hectic life. To getaway from the city, Grace finds herself at a ranch in Wyoming with a charming owner, Calvin Wells. What starts as a nice vacation away from cell phones and wifi, quickly turns dark as secrets are revealed and trust is tested.
Upon arriving at Calvin Wells’ ranch, Grace is drawn to Calvin’s rugged charm and extremely good looks. While she was planning more of a vacation filled with alone time, she finds herself exploring the ranch and exploring Calvin…However, as she explores her surroundings, she uncovers unsettling truths that cast a shadow over their budding romance.
You Shouldn’t Have Come Here is a romance thriller, but we felt the fast-paced development of Calvin and Grace’s relationship was unrealistic at times. While we understand their relationship is at the heart of this story and is the reason Grace ends up trusting Calvin, it lacked believability and distracted us from the novel. Additionally, the other characters in this story seem to be a little thin and don’t give us anymore to believe the story.
The novel starts out very slow, almost like Jeneva Rose waited to give us all the action at the end of the story. You Shouldn’t Have Come Here was filled with some predictable and unpredictable twists and turns the kept us guessing throughout, even with the slower paced storytelling. While the most exciting parts of the story were towards the climax, we still feel like the conclusion left us unsatisfied.
You Shouldn’t Have Come Here by Jeneva Rose was a nice escape from other books we are currently reading, but ultimately fell short of expectations. The love interest came on too quickly, the pacing was a little too slow and the ending left more to be desired. However, this novel was worth the read and had a few shinning moments.
