With Horror Week at Capes and Tights rolling along we finally get to one of our favorite parts of this week, acclaimed horror authors give their recommendations. In what has become a tradition during Horror Week, we discussed with a few horror authors about their favorite horror books of recent times. This year we talked with CJ Leede, Josh Winning, Liz Kerin, and Brian McAuley.
CJ Leede is a horror writer, hiker, and Trekkie. She has an MFA in Creative Writing from Columbia University, and a BA from NYU’s Gallatin School, where she studied Mythology and the Middle Ages. When she is not driving around the country, she can be found in Los Angeles, Calif. with her boyfriend and four rescue dogs. Alongside Maeve Fly, CJ has two more horror novels coming from Tor Nightfire including American Rapture on October 15, 2024.
Josh Winning is the critically acclaimed author of Burn the Negative and The Shadow Glass. He is a senior film writer at Radio Times, has written for Total Film for over a decade, and is the co-host of movie podcast Torn Stubs. During his years as a film journalist, he has been on set with Kermit the Frog (and Miss Piggy), devoured breakfast with zombies on The Walking Dead, and sat on the Iron Throne on the Dublin set of Game of Thrones. Winning released his latest novel Heads Will Roll on July 30, 2024 from G.P. Putnam’s Sons.
Liz Kerin is an author, playwright, screenwriter, and graduate of the Rita and Burton Goldberg Department of Dramatic Writing at NYU Tisch School of the Arts. She is also the author of The Phantom Forest, Night’s Edge and First Light, which hit bookstores everywhere on April 23, 2024.
Brian McAuley grew up in Weird, NJ on a steady diet of Goosebumps books and Are You Afraid of the Dark? episodes. He received his BA in Creative Writing and Horror Theory from NYU’s Gallatin School of Individualized Study before getting his MFA in Film from Columbia University. As a WGA screenwriter, Brian has written five films for the Lifetime Network in addition to writing and producing the award-winning thriller Dismissed for BoulderLight Pictures. Brian’s debut novel Curse of the Reaper was published in 2022, while his horror novella Candy Cain Kills released in 2023 and the upcoming sequel drops on November 12, 2024.

Wake Up and Open Your Eyes

Find yourself rooting for a killer in this summer teen movie of a novel gone full blood-curdling tragic.

Horror Movie

You are NOT prepared for this reality-bending, cinematic adventure that (at least, in my view) combines all the coolest things about THE SHINING, STRANGER THINGS, and TERMINATOR 2. Just go with it and trust me. In this book, a struggling actress goes on the lam with a boy who has dark, mysterious powers. They’re being hunted by the boy’s bloodthirsty father who will stop at nothing to find them. I was lucky enough to read an ARC this past month and I can’t stop thinking about it. To say more would be too spoilerific, and I want everyone to enjoy all the twisty surprises! If you enjoyed Nat’s previous books MARY and NESTLINGS, you’re going to lose your mind over this one – and if you’re not familiar with his work, it’s an amazing introduction. – Liz Kerin

I fell head over heels for Henderson’s book HOUSE OF HUNGER, and this one continues her tradition of damaged, cunning, sexy female leads who exist to defy expectations. There’s a dark, imaginative whimsy to the world building that immediately hooks you, with the perfect amount of enchantment and intrigue in the school’s lore. These students are here to learn the controversial psychological art of persuasion, but to call it “dark magic” would be too simplistic a description for this nuanced, exciting concept. Cursed Bunny

There I was on the beach on the 4th of July, cracking open a drink and this short story collection, when I immediately realized that I’d picked the WEIRDEST beach read of all time. And I’m so delighted that I did. The very first story will have you squirming in discomfort with your jaw on the floor. And then you won’t able to stop. You HAVE to know what else this twisted writer has up her sleeve. The titular story is so bizarre and memorable, and all of them touch on various themes of feminism and social justice with a sick, gruesome twist. What to say about this fabulous vampiric romp that hasn’t already been said? It’s out September 10th, so by the time you read this it will be on shelves. Lucky you! Harrison touches on modern, female-lensed fears like aging, fading friendships, and the terror of the unknown after a long relationship ends… and posits that vampirism might be the solution. She has also ruined The Who’s “Baba O’Reily” for me the same way she ruined “Sweet Child of Mine” in BLACK SHEEP. It is a unique and singular gift.. Sloane, the main character, is so relatable and Harrison’s prose always goes down silky smooth. I could read her grocery list. This fits in perfectly with her ever growing body of now classic work, and she gets better and better every time. – Liz Kerin

In this book, a naive Catholic teenager named Sophie must contend with a new, terrifying reality when the apocalypse arrives at her doorstep in the form of, well… a horde of sex-crazed zombies. She’s determined to survive and reunite with her estranged twin brother, even as the world around her crumbles.
