Review Overview

Image Comics’ Creepshow #1 is just as horrifyingly grotesque as you would expect to come from a Creepshow ongoing comic book series.

The worldwide phenomenon based on the hit Shudder TV series comes to comics in a star-studded five-issue anthology series that will scare you to death. In the debut issue, Chris Burnham (Die!Die!Die!, Nameless) terrifies with a tale of trick or treaters who are taught what happens when you mess with the wrong house.

Then, legendary Batman: The Animated Series creator Paul Dini, Stephen Langford, and John McCrea (Dead Eyes, Hitman) petrify with the party antics of Shingo, the birthday clown with an appetite for more than cake!

Each issue of Creepshow will feature different creative teams with uniquely horrifying standalone stories.

Creepshow’s first issue drops just in time for the halloween season and is just what the doctor order. With amazing illustration and story the debut issue gives you the feel of the 1982 Creepshow movie. Fans of the original film will be happy to take in this issue.

With Creep narrating the issue’s two stories gives you the feel of horrifying story time in the form of a comic book. The yellowish-tinted borders of the comic boxes gives the effect of a vintage comic book which just adds more to depth of the series. In addition, the layouts and colors give a well rounded feel.

Greg Nicatero (The Walking Dead), executive producer and director of the 2019 Creepshow Shudder television series said in the last pages of the debut comic book issue, “Oh, how I’ve dreamt of this day. To be able to reach onto a shelf and hold within my hands an actual Creepshow comic book! Wow! I can’t believe it’s taken since 1981 but as they say, All good things come to those who wait!”

Horror comic book fans should rejoice with the first issue release and look forward to the followup issue on October 26, 2022.
