‘Dream Master #1’ Is The Stuff of Nightmares

Review Overview

Jonathan Hedrick‘s new mini-series takes you to another realm in Dream Master #1 from Blackbox Comics.

There is a forgotten paladin who protects us from our nightmares while we sleep. Without him, we may never wake up again. He is the Dream Master. His curse is to guard our unconscious bodies from an evil entity who wishes to enter our reality, collapsing it for all eternity.

Hedrick, the writer behind The Recount, is joined by artist Luigi Barricelli, colorist Rubin Curto, and letterer DC Hopkins in this new five-issue monthly comic book series.

The Dream Master is here to protect you while you sleep from the nightmarish monsters. The book has drawn some comparisons to The Sandman from writer Neil Gaiman and cast of artists including Jill Thompson, Sam Kieth, Mike Dringenberg, Shawn McManus, Bryan Talbot, Marc Hempel and Michael Zulli. However, Dream Master is definitely its own animal.

Dream MasterGreat pacing, story and script combined with Barricelli’s beautiful lines and Curto’s imaginative colors gives the book depth and meaning. You get lost in the world of dreams and nightmares, but have Dream Master there to protect you.

Hedrick’s work on The Recount is one of my favorite of all-time. Fans of the series will get another chance when The Recount returns in 2023. Until then, we can fill the gap with Dream Master, plus his two one-shot comics from Source Point Press, Hyper/Aware and Caffeinated Hearts.

In addition, Hedrick’s The Recount has been optioned to be a feature filmby KadinCreative & Motor Content in the Fall of 2021 with Peter Landesman.

The debut issue features a main wraparound cover and virgin variant Cover D by Barricelli and Curto; Cover B, Cover G, virgin variant Cover E and virgin variant Cover H by Tiago da Silva; Cover C and virgin variant F by Vinz El Tab; and blank sketch variant Cover I.

Dream Master #1 is available at your local comic book shop on November 30 with the second issue dropping just before the end of 2022 on December 28.

Hedrick returns to the Capes and Tights Podcast on November 9, 2022, but until then check out his first appearance on the podcast discussing The Recount and more.
