Review Overview

Do you remember the excitement of reading books like Goosebumps as a child? We wanted to experience this all over again as an adult starting with R.L. Stine‘s Welcome to Dead House. This novel, published in 1992, is the first installment in the Goosebumps series and remains a classic for kids, even today.

Goosebumps: Welcome to Dead HouseWelcome to Dead House follows the story of siblings Josh and Amanda as they move into a new house. It’s the oldest and creepiest house on the block, and right from the start, the kids get the feeling that something is not right. Their parents brush off their concerns, so they set out to make new friends and discover their neighborhood. This is where things take a dark turn – the kids they meet are unlike any they have ever come across before. And when they take a shortcut through a cemetery one night, they realize why the house is so spooky.

Stine has written a well-crafted story that is driven from a child’s point-of-view. The tone is positive and full of adventure, and the plot is filled with twists and turns that’ll keep young readers engaged. Stine’s attention to detail in setting the scene is impeccable, and it’s easy to imagine the creepy house and the eerie cemetery.

Moreover, Welcome to Dead House is a solid introduction to horror for younger readers, with just the right level of scary content. It’s not overly graphic or violent, but it’s enough to give kids goosebumps (pun-intended) and send shivers down their spines. It’s a difficult balance to strike, but Stine pulls it off effortlessly, making this book a perfect fit for young readers who are just starting to explore the world of horror.

It is a fun, quick read for us now as adults. Cannot wait until my kids are old enough to read their first Goosebumps book!

Welcome to Dead House by R.L. Stine remains a haunting and well-crafted piece of literature for younger readers. It sets the perfect stage for a whole new generation of horror lovers, igniting their imagination and filling them with a sense of adventure. This book is an excellent way to introduce children to the world of horror fiction and offers a great starting point for further exploration.

Welcome to Dead House is available at bookstores everywhere. Libro.fm has a great audiobook narrated by Tara Sands as well!
