Review Overview

Welcome to hell, where everyday life is a constant struggle. In this world full of demons, monsters and a lot of unpleasantness, three condemned teens come together in a quest to get some ice cream – yes, you heard that right. In Hell We Fight #1 takes readers on a wild ride through the underworld, full of excitement, danger and humor.

In Hell We Fight was written by multiple Eisner-winning writer/letterer John Layman (Chew, Suicide Squad: Kill Arkham Asylum) with artwork from Argentinian superstar artist Jok.

Jok’s artwork in every panel is detailed and carefully crafted. However, the colors were a little off-putting to us. The color palette is not exactly what we were expecting and threw us for a loop. Nonetheless, as the story progressed, we quickly got used to it and appreciated the unique style.

The story itself is gripping from the start. The three condemned teens – Aamon, Scorch and Tuna – are all destined for eternal damnation. However, they come together with the help of their demon frenemy, who tags along for the ride. Their objective? Steal a demon lord’s delivery truck filled with ice cream. From there, the story only gets more exciting. As they venture deeper into the underworld, they encounter a variety of creatures and monsters that constantly throw them into dangerous situations.

Layman’s writing style perfectly combines humor and adventure. The dialogue between the characters is witty, and their interactions offer a refreshing comedic relief amidst all the chaos. The characters themselves are also well-defined, with unique personalities that make them stand out. We particularly enjoyed the development of the demon frenemy, who grows on you as the story progresses.

Overall, the mix of adventure and humor, along with the stunning line work and world-building, creates a story that is both entertaining and engaging. While the color palette may throw some readers off at first, we believe that the unique style adds to the overall aesthetic of the comic book. We can’t wait to see where the group and their demon frenemy go next.

In Hell We Fight #1 hit local comic shops on June 7, 2023 from Image Comics.
