You know when Rob Guillory is attached to a new comic series that its going to be one that is wonderfully crafted, as well as one that is going to make you think on a different level. Innards, which he is partnered up with artist Sam Lotfi, is just that comic. A sci-fi adventure horror that hits hard and is going to be a thrilling ride.
It’s Roy Wilder’s first day on the most dangerous job in the world.
After a catastrophic nuclear attack, humanity’s last energy source is Lucifium. The mineral, buried miles beneath Earth’s surface, is accessible only by teleportation and navigation through an inhospitable subterranean maze.
The motley brotherhood of “divers” employed by the ONIS corporation gambles their bodies and minds in pursuit of a better future for themselves and their loved ones. The high-risk, high-reward mission attracts the daring and desperate alike, and all must be unflinching to survive under the leadership of grizzled rig boss Jax Ridley. But even the boldest will break when Roy’s initiation cracks the seal on a harrowing corporate secret… and the depths come alive to awaken the crew’s inner demons.
Some of my favorite comics over the years have been Chew and Farmhand, two comics that have such unique stories and either feature Guillory’s writing and/or artwork. I always know I am in for an original tale that will have me thinking long after I close the final page. Innards is one of the stories you can add to that list.
Innards is a comic that delivers on many levels, from the extents you will go to support the ones you love to keeping our planet going catastrophic nuclear attack to the mystery of the subterranean, even if your eventual death is inevitable. Even one of these points would make for an interesting story, but with the combination of them all, it’s top-notch storytelling.
The premiere issue lays a great foundation and grips you along the way, but also leave such a mystery of what will happen next for these divers. There is also someone who might not be telling the full truth or hiding something at least. Making me think deeply about what we have in store.
One thing that really stood out for me in this first issue of Innards was the amazing layouts, something that normally may not jump out at me but struck as something special. This made the already outstanding Lotfi illustrations within the panels that much more visually stunning. What lays beneath is mysterious, Lotfi made sure of that.
Innards #1 was exactly the type of debut that reminds me why I keep coming back to these type of comics, something that is bold and strange with just the right about of mystery. Rob Guillory and Sam Lofti craft a world that feels dangerous, emotional, and visually unforgettable right off the bat. It’s a comic you must add to your pull-list and won’t want to miss.
Innards #1 hits local comic shops on May 6, 2026 from Ignition Press.
