The future of the DC Universe has a promising outlook with Warner Bros. Discovery’s hiring of James Gunn and Peter Safran to head-up the newly formed DC Studios.
Gunn and Safran will serve as Co-Chairmen and Chief Executive Officers of DC Studios, which replaces DC Film, to overseeing the overall creative direction of the DC Universe across film, television and animation under a single banner. The hope is for Gunn and Safran to become a tag-team version of Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige.
Safran is a longtime Hollywood producer and has spent the last few years producing films for DC including Shazam!, The Suicide Squad, Shazam! Fury of the Gods, Blue Beetle, and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. His resume also includes a number of horror films.
The talented Gunn has been back and forth between Marvel Studios and DC Studios. He wrote and directed Guardians of the Galaxy, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, and the forthcoming The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 at Marvel. While at DC, Gunn wrote and directed The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker.
Both new hires at DC Studios either have a fandom for the world of comic books or worked on the creative side of the comic book movie world. This is a change from what Warner Bros. Discovery has done in the past with more of a business focus. Having the heads of DC Studios be on the creative side will only brighten the future of the DC world of movie and television.
Congratulations to Gunn and Safran and to DC comic and movie fans around the world.
