One of the most polarizing Star Wars characters in history is Jar Jar Binks, which I likely the reason we have only seen the character a few times in Star Wars comics over the years. Now, Binks gets his own title issue, Star Wars: Jar Jar #1 written by the actor to portray him on screen Ahmed Best and veteran comic writer Marc Guggenheim with artwork by Laura Braga and Kieran McKeown.
Jar Jar faces the consequences of giving emergency powers to Chancellor Palpatine. What pivotal role does Jar Jar play in the formation of the Rebel Alliance?
I for one have been in the camp of the non-haters of Mr. Binks. I felt he gave a bit of comedic relief to the Star Wars universe and his unique speaking pattern was just another thing that made the galaxy far, far away such a special place. However, I have understood why there are those who have disliked that character, those in the camp of it was too much CGI mostly. What I never understood was the hate on Best for doing the best job possible and getting the ability to be in an iconic franchise.
Now, if you are a hater of Jar Jar, this comic isn’t going to change that for you, as this is basically the same character, antics, and humor you found on the big screen on television. However, this does give those fans of the character some love and maybe those who are new to the character a chance to see what he is all about.
Jar Jar has made some mistakes in the past and in this comic goes on a mission to see what is really going on. After what he sees, this story gives Jar Jar the chance to hopefully redeem himself and maybe even play a role in the start of the Rebel Alliance. It’s a meaningful story with more impact on the great Star Wars lore than I had expected.
It’s not often you get to read a comic about a character from the actor who played said character. Best getting the opportunity to craft a story, alongside Guggenheim, from the eyes of his character and hopefully redeem those who have villainized him in the past. Not to mention, getting to also write for the other character he portrayed Kelleran Beq. This gives Jar Jar a unique and authentic feel that made for a great story.
The artwork from Braga and McKeown have the Star Wars comic feel, just what we’d hoped for in a Jar Jar comic. It’s nice to see Binks come to life in each and every panel.
Star Wars: Jar Jar is a fun, action-packed, and impactful story from one of Star Wars most polarizing characters. Ahmed Best breaks into comics with the chance to craft a story based on two of his Star Wars characters and does so with ease. With the help of Marc Guggenheim and artists Laura Braga and Kieran McKeown, Jar Jar returns with the hope of redemption in just the right way.
Star Wars: Jar Jar #1 hit local comic shops on February 11, 2026 from Marvel Comics.
