Review Overview

The Legendary Lynx is such a fun meta experience. A comic book that original only existed within the pages of Secret Identity and Alter Ego is now available to experience from a real life publisher. Something unique and amazing.

The lost story of Carmen Valdez has been found! Now, for the first time ever, readers will share a knowing wink and travel back in time to experience one of the seminal “lost” comic book stories! Lynx, the classic superhero, must choose between her heroic responsibilities and an overdue debt to a dear friend. Experience all four issues of this fictional forgotten gem in a delightfully retro comic book adventure!

LA Book Prize winning author Alex Segura gives us a truly intriguing story with The Legendary Lynx. Transported from the pages of Segura’s novels, where is served as the central piece of the plot, this comic offers us an opportunity to experience what the characters in the novels got to see in the fictional world created by Segura. While we got glimpses of the pages of these comics within the chapter breaks in the novels, we now get a chance to dive into the full story.

Brought to life by artist Sandy Jarrell and colorist Allison Grey, The Legendary Lynx evokes a sense of nostalgia. Jarrell employs clean lines and simple color palettes reminiscent of comic artists of the past. The design of the graphic novel is also top notch as the faux-faded pages and yellowed paper creates an authentic vintage feel that transports us back to the comic book days of old. This, on top of a wonderful written tale, gives us a truly outstanding experience like nothing else.

While Segura is a phenomenal author, he is an outstanding comic writer in his own right with credits such as Spider-Society, Dick Tracy and more to his name. This versatility allowed him to tell a comic tale that weaves perfectly into his award-winning novel, Secret Identity and the followup Alter Ego. The deep understanding of the world of comics allowed him to tell a nearly perfect story within the pages of his novel, but also allows him to realistically recreate the tale of The Legendary Lynx in real life comic form.

The Legendary Lynx graphic novel by writer Alex Segura and artist Sandy Jarrell is an experience that fans of Segura’s novels will truly appreciate, but is really a love letter to comic book fans. You don’t need prior knowledge of the novels to get a breathtaking experience from this graphic novel, although it is highly recommended you read the books. The Legendary Lynx was born out of Segura’s novels, but is a comic that can stand on its own merits.

The Legendary Lynx graphic novel hits bookstores everywhere on November 12, 2024 and local comic shops on November 13 from Mad Cave Studios. Check out Secret Identity and Alter Ego from Alex Segura.
