Jonathan Hedrick‘s hit 2020 comic book series The Recount will get a second term coming in 2023 at Scout Comics, Hedrick announced via social media on Thursday.
The Recount: Second Term will feature the return of Volume 1’s original artist Gabriel Ibarra Núñez, along with letters from Cristian Docolomansky. Lorenzo Molinari serves as the book’s editor like in the original series. The sequel’s story will also be a four-issue arc as in the first volume.
The first volume takes place after the assassination of a U.S. President. The conspirators turn their sights on all who helped him get into power. By this, they mean to kill everyone who helped him ascend to the presidency-including the ordinary citizens who elected him, essentially plunging the entire country into civil war. Meanwhile, the Vice President, one of the few survivors of the executive branch, struggles to prevent the nation from descending into chaos.
Some have described the comic as having the political intrigue of Netflix’s House of Cards blended with the horror of The Purge film series. Which is definitely unsettling, but worth the read.
The Recount‘s success took some by surprise and Hedrick is grateful for the reception his book has received. “It’s probably the scariest thing I’ve ever written,” said Hedrick to Capes and Tights. “Scary as in having to live up to the first volume as well as being some dark shit! Regardless, I have a therapist on standby.”
The creator discussed his political thriller on Episode 51 of the Capes and Tights Podcast. Hedrick will likely give us a glimpse of what you can expect from The Recount: Second Term and more about his other works when he joins us once again on Episode 66 coming in November.
Hedrick was able to give fans of The Recount a little taste of something more with his The Recount: Preamble one-shot released in 2022 with artist Gil Lopez. Preamble serves as a prequel to the original series.
The Florida native has also released books such as Hyper/Aware, Caffeinated Hearts, and Capable. Hedrick’s next comic book to hit your local comic book shop is Dream Master from Blackbox Comics.
