Writer Justin Richards and artist Val Halvorson redefine the true-crime podcasting trope in The Slasher’s Apprentice, taking the thrilling tale to a whole new level at Mad Cave Studios.
Riley, a horror-obsessed podcaster with a slasher villain fixation, is seeking a new career path: Helping her favorite legendary slasher, The Hopton Valley Killer, regain their long-lost notoriety while learning the ropes herself.
Co-written by Justin Richards and Val Halvorson, with illustrations by the latter, The Slasher’s Apprentice is a fantastic premiere issue and would not be surprised if it becomes a well-loved addition to the horror genre. The wonderful reimagining of classic horror tropes such as a true-crime podcaster and blending the familiar with the unexpected creates something truly fresh and horrifying. Justin and Val have crafted something that gives us a unique yet familiar story at the same time.
The Slasher’s Apprentice is filled with suspense, a bit of dark humor, and well placed nods to the slasher genre. The story does a great job bridging the gap between classic and modern horror while bringing to the front our protagonists obsession with an invoice killer. Riley has ambitions that stretch far beyond what we would expect a true-crime podcast would have, so far that some may say it’s too far. However, Riely wants to cement her own legacy and redefine the what it takes to be a slasher using her own set of rules.
Halvorson brings uniquely impressive clean lines and imagery to the table for a horror story, yet another piece of the puzzle that gives The Slasher’s Apprentice an edge over the rest in the genre. While, of course, the necessary blood and gore are ever present, Halvorson uses just the right about of grotesque imagery to make the panels featuring said artwork striking and impactful. The blend of artwork and storytelling made for a promising start to the horror series. You can really tell Justin and Val have a love for the slasher genre.
The Slasher’s Apprentice #1 lays some great groundwork for the remaining four issues and hooked me with the engaging plot and an intriguing protagonist. The creative team, Justin Richards and Val Halvorson–plus colorist Rebecca Nalty and letterer Buddy Beaudoin, deliver a compelling debut issue that is truly a must-read for slasher horror fans.
The Slasher’s Apprentice #1 hits local comic shops on April 30, 2025 (FOC: April 7) from Mad Cave Studios.
