Review Overview

A Haunted Girl is a supernatural thriller packed with emotional depth, intriguing characters, and terrifying ghosts that will have you on the edge of your seat. Written by Ethan Sacks (Star Wars, Old Man Quill) and his daughter Naomi Sacks with art from Marco Lorenzana.

First and foremost, the story of A Haunted Girl is one that will truly touch your heart. Cleo, the protagonist, is an adopted 16-year-old Japanese-American girl who has been struggling with severe depression. As she tries to reintegrate back into her old life, things take a terrifying turn when she begins to encounter ghost after ghost. The story is incredibly well-paced, and the plot is full of twists and turns that will leave you wanting more.

One thing that really stands out about A Haunted Girl is the amazing artwork by Marco Lorenzana. The illustrations are detailed, full of life, and work perfectly with the story. You can really feel the emotions of the characters through the art, especially Cleo’s fear and pain as she encounters each ghost. The imagery is also absolutely stunning on multiple pages, making it easy to become fully immersed in the story.

Despite its supernatural elements, A Haunted Girl is an easy, fast read that you won’t want to put down. The comic book does an excellent job of not overwhelming the reader with too much information and instead focusing on moving the story forward at a steady pace. It raises questions and leaves just enough mystery to keep readers invested.

One of the things that really impressed us about A Haunted Girl is that it tackles some very real and relatable issues. Cleo’s depression and her struggles to fit in are just a few examples of the many themes the comic book touches upon. These issues are portrayed so well that readers can really empathize with Cleo’s pain and her journey. The Sacks writing duo does a phenomenal job weaving these themes into the story, making it a more rounded and fulfilling read.

A Haunted Girl is a unique story with brilliant art and emotional depth making for a riveting read. The collected edition hit local comic shops on May 22, 2024 and bookstores everywhere on June 4 from Syzygy Publishing and Image Comics.

We read A Haunted Girl as part of the Galactic Comics Book Club.
